You can't go wrong with either, seeing as how they're the top dogs in the consumer camera market. Try out some models from both brands at a nearby camera/electronic store and see which one you like better. If all else fails, flip a coin.

P.S. I hate to nitpick but the brand name is Canon.

For DSLR's it's a close competition. For compact digitals, Canons often get more favorable reviews.
I have some Nikon DSLR's and Canon compacts. My EVIL camera is Olympus.

As well noted, a cannon is something you fire.
For a point and shoot it really doesn't make much difference between Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Olympus, Sony, or Panasonic. And for under $200- what you're shopping for is features at what price.
If you were shopping for a DSLR then stick to either Nikon or Canon brands.
Good cameras are:
Canon SD1400 IS
Canon 100HS
Fuji S2950
Casio EX-Z2000
PS-What you don't want to buy are cameras of these brands: Vivitar, GE, Holga, Sanyo and Kodak.

My answer is neither the best model make out on the market has to be fujifilm because 4 of my cameras are from that make and they are the best ever and my other 2 are from nikon and They are ok but not as good as my fujifilms I also have one from cannon and it's ok.

but, to answer your question then I would pick… Nikon

Hmm… Your price range is kinda low for such high end brands. However Nikon has a Coolpix brand of point and shoot cameras while Canon has Powershot. Canon is better as far as the point in shoot types go. However if you are in the market looking for DSLR (big black professional looking cameras with interchangeable lens) then Nikon has the slight advantage in my opinion. Unfortunately the cheapest DSLR will run about $500 so your probably going to want to stick to the Powershot/Coolpix series.

My personal rankings are:

For compacts:
1. Lumix
2. Canon
3. Sony
4. Olympus
5. Fujifilm

For dSLRs:
1. Nikon
2. Canon
3. Olympus
4. Pentax
5. Sony

That's just personal opinion, based on my own experience and observations.
