Using different brand lens for different brand camera?

I'm thinking about purchasing a Pentax ZX-L camera.

It's coming with a camera case, 75-300mm zoom lens, 58mm Skylight 1-A filter, and cable switch for extended exposure shots.
Does anyone know if the 75-300mm zoom lens a good lens?

Can I use other brand lenses? (Like Nikon, or Ricoh).

If so, what other brands can I use?

Please help! I'm new to this and would really appreciate the knowledge.

You can only use lenses made for the camera's mount. Typically, the camera brand lenses will only fit on that brand. However, 3rd party lenses; those made by Tokina, Sigma, Tamron, etc. Are made for several brand cameras. But be aware that they are still not interchangeable.

For instance, a Tokina lens made for a Nikon camera will not fit a Canon camera (Tokina does make a Canon camera mount lens though, which is the one you would need if you had a Canon).

There are 3rd party adapters that do allow for lenses made for different brand cameras to fit on another. There are some issues to using such adapters.

First, you will have to use the camera in manual exposure mode only. And it will not autofocus.

Further, you will not be able to focus to infinity in most situations, so the lens will be limited to close ups.

And finally, since the adapter is not specifically made for a specific lens, the optical quality is going to generally be less than a lens designed for that camera.

You have purchased a 35 mm auto-focus camera made by Pentax.

You need to buy auto-focus lenses with "K-Mounts"

The 75-300 mm lens is fine if you want to shoot field sports.

What are you going to do without a 28-80 mm lens for shooting your most common subjects

Just buy lenses made for your camera.

The ZX-L has a Pentax K-mount. You can only use lenses with a Pentax K-mount. If you want to preserve autofocus function, get only AF lenses with the Pentax K-mount.

No, you can't use Nikon, Canon, Minolta, Sony or Olympus. Be warned with Ricoh. They are both K-mount but Ricoh has a different pin arrangement which gets stuck in the Pentax K-mount body. Avoid Ricoh lenses for your Pentax cameras unless you know exactly what you are doing (remove the errant pin - not for the faint hearted).

You can use any third-party lens brand that has a Pentax K-mount. Tokina, Sigma, Tamron, Promaster all have lenses made with the Pentax K-mount. There are also high end lenses made for the Pentax K-mount like Zeiss and Schneider. Have I already stressed K-mount more than enough? Good. That's because all Pentax dSLR's use the same Pentax K-mount thereby allowing you to migrate to digital seamless using your old film lenses with all the newer digital SLR bodies.
