What are some cheap, high quality digital cameras?

I'm looking for a digital camera that is cheap and takes high quality pictures. I'm leaning towards Canon and Nikon since I have had them in the past. I currently have a Panasonic Lumix that I'm not happy with at all. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I was looking for a second camera and settled on the nikon coolpix, it was a great price and at 10 megapixels takes good pics too
