Cheap tripods are a waste of time and money, you frame your shot and they droop, you frame again and they sag, and so on in an endless dog chasing it's tail routine.

Buy quality - buy once applies more to tripods than any other piece of camera kit. Buy a good one and you never have to buy another, it will last you all your life.

Manfrotto is about as cheap as I would go.

Screwdriver is absolutely correct. Trying to get away with buying a cheap tripod will only result with you spending more money than if you use buy a good one in the first place. Nobody but the most pathetic of fools buys cheap tripods and likes them.

Here is how it goes: You buy a camera and then decide that you would like a tripod, so you go to a store or online or something and find one that you think will be ok. The price is nice and you get it. Once at home you break it out, and look over it's features and think its just great. A few weeks go by and you notice that your camera slips a bit, and the tripod is flimsy. These conditions only get worse and worse and worse until you get the point that you quit using it. Off to the closet it goes. One day you spot it the closet, and have forgotten all that made you disappointed with it. You use it for something and all that was wrong with it comes rushing back, so in a fit of anger, you throw it across the yard hopefully breaking it. Either way, it will never be used again. You buy a good tripod and smack yourself for thinking that a cheap one will work. They never work, I guarantee it.

A good tripod has a distinct feature, it looks like it might be able to hold your weight. Don't actually climb on it of course. If it's painfully obvious it would collapse, it's a cheapo. A good tripod starts at prices that are not that outlandish. You usually buy the tripod for about 100-150 bucks, then buy the head which will run 50 to 100. Those are lower end prices, they do go up from there. I like Manfrotto stuff myself, they make perfectly good stuff. You'll have it for the rest of your life.

You can find Manfrotto stuff on websites such a B&H.
