Tripod suggestion please for nikon?

My friend just had a baby and she is looking for a tripod for her nikon d3100 to take some family pictures. Any suggestions please

Sure. The 3100 isn't a heavy camera with an 18-55 on it and Wal Mart sells pretty stable tripods for around $40 with a carrying bag. I own 3 of these and they've always served me well.

Unless it is an ultra-portable tripod

(which has uses, but very limited ones), I don't like to go that cheap. Better steadiness and durability, and smoother adjustment cost more and are worth it. A pretty good economy tripod is the Slik Sprint Pro II. It can fit a medium size daypack.

If it is windy or if using a front heavy telephoto, something heftier would be preferable.
If it doesn't have to fit in a daypack, this combo should be great.

If better portability is needed, I use the same Manfrotto 804RC2 head

combined with a more compact legset
