SLR Brands? Possibly European?
Aside from the powerhouse brands such as Cannon, Nikon, Leica (although its not very known), Etc… What are some other brands from Europe that may not come up in our advertising but can stand up to the quality and are worth comparing when thinking about buying a camera.
Pentax, Sony (formerly Minolta) and Olympus build fine cameras.
The reason they are not as popular has NOTHING to do with their quality.
Nikon and Canon (not cannon) have been making professional level camera for over twenty years in the case of Canon, over fifty years in the case of Nikon, so their systems are just huge in comparison to those other brands.
None. There's some lenses still being made like Zeiss but that's it. Optical and camera industry was pretty much wiped out from the 1950s onwards by asian competition
I think all your European options would be vintage since the SLR market has been effectively conquered by Asia.
Some respectible vintage Euro SLR's I can think of (aside from Leica):
Alpa
Hasselblad
Contarex (zeiss)
About the nearest you are going to get to a modern European digital SLR is to go for a Panasonic.
While the company is Japanese, many of their lenses are designed by Leica.
