SD card will not open my pictures on Windows 7 computer?

I recently got this new gateway intel 35700 Dual core processor with Windows 7 premium. I have a Nikon Coolplix digital camera with a 512 MB SD card. My card reader isn't reading my SD card. Here is what I have done so far.
1. My computer will not make a noise indicating that I have inserted a memory card in the reader. I checked to make sure my SD card was in the unlock position, and it is.
2. I went to Device manager clicked on Disk drives and in that sub menu I clicked on the option that says Multiple USB flash reader and it says correct driver is already installed (but I think that is for the flash drive).
3. I was looking for the memory card reader option, so I can update driver to that, but I can't find it. What would it be called exactly and what sub menu in device manager and where would I find it?

Where would I find any removable devices that I would not know about on Windows 7?

I'm used to the old XP on my old computer, and I didn't have an SD card reader. Shouldn't a window or something pop up when I put the SD card in the slot where I can open my photos or videos? My computer is SD compatible, so you would think it would work. It says xD/SD/MMC/MS/MS Pro above the slot.

Any information will be helpful

Added (1). It doesn't say if the card is compatible with windows 7? The SD card and camera is a few years old. I think it should work since the card is less than 1 to 2 GB

Added (2). @ Kevin, that worked finally, and they open. I'm just not used to windows 7, and have been trying to trouble shoot this for an hour. I overthink things plus windows 7 is confusing compared to XP, I think.

Is the card itself compatible with windows 7?

When you put the memory card in, click the start button and click computer. The memory card should show up in there with the other hard drives
