Scope choice on a.308 for deer hunting?

Like some of you suggest 4-12x power is enough for deer hunting. So with that in mind, your post didn't help me choosing a right scope. It has to be in the $200 range, nothing over $250 please. The scopes on my mind are the Redfield Revenge 4-12x42, the Nikon Prostaff 4-12x40, the Mueller 4-16x, the Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40, The Vortex crossfire II 4-16, Simmons Whitetail Classic. I'm really intrested in the Vortex scopes, but there's little to none feedback on them. Also I heard Swift scopes are good too, any feedback on these. Everything helps thanks

I would look at a vortex viper 2-7x if you are not going to be shooting over 300 yards.

Cameraland has them for $200. They are very clear for the price and Vortex has great customer service, just go check out various shooting forums.

Vortex has an excellent unconditional lifetime warranty and really good optics for their price point. Simmons has never been one of my favorites and the Nikon Prostaff is decent but if it were my money I'd go Vortex.

I have a Leupold VX-I, and that's what I recommend for a reasonably priced scope. You'd have to buy a 3-9x40 VX-I to keep it in your price range, but 3-9 is plenty for deer hunting. I also have a Nikon Pro-Staff. The Leupold has better clarity and better fit & finish. The Redfield is actually built by Leupold and is quite similar to the Leupold VX-I and Rifleman scopes, so I would also give a nod to the Redfield.

What kind of hunting?
Unless you shoot from a rest at long range, anything over about 6X is wasted.

Leupold, i know that you don't have it in your list but it should be.these scopes are reliable, have about the clearest views through almost any scope that i have used, and can withstand quite a bit of punishment. So i strongly suggest this brand… They are strong and reliable, and at a reasonable price.

Leupold Rifleman $250 is not that great of a scope, so no I'd stay away. Simmons sit in the closet snort talcum powder flush money.
Nikon can get loose inside
Vortex for the price and I agree magnification is way over rated aim small miss small.
My Rifles are set up to drop to the second button 1in left @600 yards when aimed at the"Adams apple' of the target aim small.

Midway USA has one of the Simmons Whitetail Classics on sale, reg $249 or so for about $125. They frequently have it on "sale". One of my son's buddies has one and likes it.
