Savage 111 Rifle Scope?
Hi, I'm looking to buy a savage 111 for $500 (on sale, marked down from $550) and comes with A Nikon 3-9x40 scope. First of all, is that a good price for this gun? And second is that a decent scope?
1. I haven't priced new rifles in a while but that price seems to be on the high end of a reasonable price for a Savage 111 (great rifle BTW)
2. Nikon makes very nice optics, I've purchased 3 in the last few years for some of my rifles.
In my area $500 for a savage is a very good deal.new gun, right?
normally they go for between $650-$800.
nikon makes very good scopes. 3-9 power is most suitable for hunting medium or large game. Its not well suited for precision shooting. It could be a decent scope, if hunting is what you plan on doing with it.
and caliber matters.a 111 in something like 223 - not worth it.
a 111 in 223 WSSM, worth it.
the 111 is short action magnum caliber. If it's not in a magnum caliber it's not actually worth $500.
The Savage tends to bounce around in price quite a bit if you watch the ads. I bought one a few years back for $500, and then a month later the exact gun was on sale for $350. The scope on mine was also the Nikon 3-9 with reticles. It's actually a really nice scope. The Nikon website also has a program for you to type in the exact load and gun you are placing your scope on and what distance you want to zero. Then it tells you where each reticle will hit with remarkably spot on accuracy. Pretty impressive setup for a gun combo.
Thats a good price for the gun but its not really on sale. Academy has the same gun for $500 as its normal price. The package does help you save you a lot of money. The scope is a great scope (its costs $150 + by itself and if its already mounted and bore sighted thats a plus so youre basically get the rifle for $325 or so) Savages are good guns for their price from what i hear and i know the accutrigger that comes on them is nice to have. I would buy it if youre needing a solid hunting rifle thats accurate and durable.
That's a reasonable price for the gun and scope.
A Savage 111 could cost you somewhere in the $350-$450 range without the scope, so $500 with a Nikon scope is pretty reasonable. Not fantastic, but reasonable. I'm going to guess that the Nikon isn't one of their Monarch scopes, but is instead probably one of the Nikon Prostaff models and would be about $150-$200.

Amazon has that scope, which is probably identical to the one on the rifle you're looking at, for barely over $150. What the combo you're interested in has, though, is a set of scope rings. Since good rings could cost you $50 or more, the combo is probably a better option than buying the rifle, scope, and rings separately… But then again, you might get a better deal buying everything separately. Find out how much the gun dealer would charge you for the rifle by itself, a good set of rings, and a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40mm.
But ultimately, so long as your scope is a good one and the rings aren't junk, you should be okay with the combo.
