Is it alright to use this scope on my savage axis 223?

I found a great deal on a nikon p-223 bdc 600 scope. Is this scope designed for use on a non ar platform?

If you were to mount this scope on your savage axis 223, would you also buy a scope mount rail that had 0 or 20 moa?

Ill be shooting probably no more than 300 yards.

It might be designed for the AR platform, but the BDC will only be a little off at 600 yards with the extra velocity from a bolt gun.

At 300 yds, you'd not likely notice a difference. Point of impact would be less than 2" difference at 300 yds.

Realize, BDC's are designed to get you in the ballpark easily. Unless you develop handloads to exactly match the BDC, you will never be 'right on' with a BDC across all ranges. Even differences in temperature/air pressure will affect point of impact.

That scope will work fine for your gun. The Nikons are a great choice.

I would stick with a standard scope mount. Adjustable ones are handy only in very specific situations, otherwise they're just another potential point of failure. The KISS principle applies here.

The BDC is only a rough guideline, and not a very good one, since Nikon doesn't know the specifics of your exact rifle (AR or not) and what type of ammo you're using. However, Nikon makes a smartphone app called Spot On that asks you all these variables, and then uses that to calculate where your shots will land at a given distance using the various aimpoints on the BDC reticle. It gives a pretty good estimate, and you can print out cheat sheets that will help you reference where to aim at what range with your given setup. It's been a very helpful tool for me. Strelok+ is another very good app to use, but it gets a bit more advanced and complicated than most people need. For everyday shooting, I prefer the Nikon app.

Scopes don't care what kind of rifle they are mounted on as long as they can handle the recoil. You don't need a 20 MOA rail unless you are shooting beyond 600 yds, and a 20 MOA rail might keep you from sighting in at a shorter distance.

It will be fine. BDC scopes only work perfectly if you are shooting exactly the same load out of the same gun in the same weather conditions, but they will get you close enough to do your own measurements.

You do not need a 20 MOA rail on your rifle. If you zero at 100 yards, the drop MOA at 300 yards will only be about 5 or less. Even at 600 yards the drop MOA is less than 20 with 77 gr bullets. The scope has 80 MOA of adjustment.
