Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flash.any good?
Here is a link to it: http://www.nikon.ca/...px?m=14564
My fiance and I just got our first SLR camera last year, and I wanted to get him a flash piece for his birthday. We will be using it for fun, at our wedding and on vacations. We don't need it to be super complicated, honestly with his technical skills plug-and-play would be the best.
Anyone have any insight on this flash? Is it worth it to go up nearly double the price for another flash that has other features?
Any advice is welcome. Thanks!
Added (1). I should add… We do have a Nikon camera, which is why I'm looking at Nikon flashes.
For its cost, it is an excellent flash for your purposes and specifically is designed for use with Nikon digital cameras.
It is reputed to be good, but somewhat underfeatured. It can be turned up to bounce off the ceiling if the camera is held in landscape mode, but it can't be rotated to the ceiling if the camera is held in portrait mode. So people who get the SB400 often find themselves coveting the more expensive SB700, which has more power and adjustability.
The SB400 is certainly more capable than the camera's built in flash.
If you can still find an SB600 at a Camera store get it. Much better flash
it has a zoom head and a wide flash adaptor
the flash head tilts and swivels to allow for bouncing off of walls and or ceilings in either landscape or portrait orientation
Direct on Camera flash tends to be harsh and flat, and produces harsh shadows on anything visible behind your subject which is why bouncing the flash when on the shoe is preferred wherever possible
the SB 600 will also interface with other Flash units as a Wireless Slave for Multi-flash setups using the Advanced Wireless Lighting system which the SB 400 will not do. If there's even a remote chance of ever stepping up to a multi-flash setup get the SB 600
The Nikon SB-400 Speedlight is an intelligent and versatile external flash unit that provides i-TTL flash operation in a super-compact and ultra-lightweight body at an affordable price.
Designed as an entry-level external flash, this flash is ideal for the compact D-40 digital SLR camera, but it is also useful for hobbyists and professionals looking for a handy i-TTL flash unit offering an effortless bounce flash function. When combined with cameras that are compatible with the Nikon Creative Lighting System, the SB-400 is controlled in i-TTL and D40's M (manual) mode.
