Artist adding lenses for Nikon D90?
I'm a combination artist/painter, architect and photographer. I'm looking to expand my lens kit. I shoot mostly street, landscape, indoor low light situations, almost all natural light, a few candid portraits. I'm primarily interested in fine art photography, black and white especially.
I currently have a D90 w/ 35mm/f1.8, a Tamron 17-50/ f2.8, that's it.
I would like a slightly wider lens for street shots. I'm drawn to prime lenses because of low light ability. I would like a little more reach than I have for the occasional distant image, say the moon rising, or a sport event.
So I'm thinking of adding the 50mm/1.8, and also the18-105vr or 55-200vr. Then later on the wide end, the Tokina 11-16, or Sigma 10-20 or Nikon 12-24.
I have some trouble with the 17-50, I get error messages saying its not getting good connection, so 1 out of 10 shots I get an error message, I have to twist the lens to get the connection back for autofocus. I can manual focus all day, its just autofocus giving issues…
So lens kit if I sell 17-50 would look like:
Sigma 10-20, 35/1.8, 50/1.8, 18-105, or 55-200…
Any suggestions? Should I keep the 17-50 and try to figure out why its not shooting?
18-105, or 55-200?
Thanks. I'm leedeparis on flickr if you want to see my typical work.

This is NOT an endorsement for Tamron.
The Tokina 11-16 mm lens is the only generic lens I can recommend. The 12-24 mm Nikkor is an excellent lens.
Here is are two sample shots using it on an old 6 mp D100
Your 17-50 seems to have a contact issue. Happens. Clean the contacts.
I'd much rather have tokina 11-16 if only because it's a constant f2.8 with rather constant distortion and built like a brick. 18-105 or 55-200. For what you want, moons and sports the 55-200 would make the most sense.
If you did sell the 17-50 you'd be without a walk around zoom.
I love my sigma 10 20:-)
For "Art" work look at the diana lens:-)
I can recommend the Sigma 10-20mm for the wide end - I've used it for 'environmental portraits' too;
As for a prime with a little more reach, I use the 85mm f1.8 a fair bit for street candids.
For Moon shots or sport, you want to be at 300mm+ really. Nikon do a 300mm f4 lens but at just under a grand it ain't cheap!
