I want a DSLR but don't know what brand to choose. I know that both Nikon and Canon are pretty darn good but its just so hard to choose. Also, what is the best camera by both brands?

In my opinion Nikon is more colorful and providing more options with the same price you could get from Canon, but most people tend to use Canon.

Best cameras will be Canon's 1D mk IV and the nikon D3 series. Both costing the better part of $10k.

Now, as a beginner both are fine, go to a shop, handle both, see which one feels best for you.

But sony has this transparent mirror that hits the focus sensor and the image sensor at the same time and doesn't have to move the mirror out to take the picture.
if you were to set the canon to live view on the main display and take the picture it takes a lot longer to move the mirror to focus and take the picture.

The question is very general but I will try to give you some guidance. 4 months ago I was in the same dilemma. Canon EOS 500D or Nikon D3100? Only one thing was sure, my budget. I read forums and review pages. To me was crucial scores for image quality of Nikon and somehow it was logical given that the said model of Nikon has physically larger sensor and fewer megapixels. From what I know, more pixels on a smaller area means more image noise.
Sure you must start from some position, what would be the purpose, budget, etc. With such information you can get some guidance.
Both manufacturers are known as producers of high-quality cameras in different levels which lastly vary in price(from level to level).
With this query you will only get fan answers.
Cheers.

Ok here's what you should be asking, which brand has better lenses? A camera body is comparable on both brand but in the long run, you will invest on lenses more and everybody on planet earth knows that Canon lenses are far better than Nikons. Especially the Canon's L series lenses. Search the Canon lens vs Nikon lens, you will know why photographers have that big white lenses. Btw thats Canon lens. The debate ends there.
