What are your goals?

Many sports and editorial photographers have been buying Nikon systems because of their superb performance in low light conditions

Both companies make excellent camera systems, but you are going to want to do a lot of your own research, looking closely at the features and lenses available with each brand.

Spend some time visiting your local camera store, holding the various models of each brand. Look through some of the available lenses to get an idea of that your "second" lens may be.

The most popular entry level cameras are the Nikon D5100 and Canon T3i/600D, but if you think you will want the new Nikon D4, buying a Canon T3i would be and expensive mistake. Same goes the other way. If the Canon 1DX is your ultimate goal, buying the fine Nikon d5100 would be a mistake

I prefer Nikon because they are better for low lighting situations. Plus, they are a tad bit cheaper.

I personally Shoot Canon. But go to a camera store and try them out. They have a very different feel from each other, and different button layouts. Find what feels better for you. I like Canon because the Layout was nicer for me with the buttons, and because of the Wider assortment of lenses. Nikon has a little better color sensor, autofocusing and better ISO performance. You can also use Older nikon lenses with newer Nikon cameras. Canon updated its system from the older FD mount to EOS mount for its digital cameras, so you need an FD to EOS adapter for that. Canon however has better and cheaper full frame cameras like the 5D. They have better FPS(frames per second) compared to most nikons, with a few exceptions. Also I have noticed for when I photograph weddings, I can pull back blown out highlights and fine details in the white dress better then with nikon cameras.
