Depends on the type of camera you require.
Typical SLR's look at who is using them most Sporting shooters use CANON Portrait Wedding Landscape guys use Nikon.
Point and shoot the type you can put in your pocket, there's little difference, just be wary of the type of battery you might need.

You want a point & shoot camera with at least a 5x zoom lens and Canon will be the best in this case.
3x zoom lenses are useless-don't waste your money!
P.s. Always shoot with the maximum resolution setting on any digital camera.
