Nikon FE VS Pentax K1000?

What camera would be better for a intro to film photography class?

I would go with the Pentax because their lenses also work on the Pentax digital cameras, so if you want to go ahead and invest in a lens or two you can still use it for digital if you get a Pentax. Most of the Nikon film lenses don't work right on the Nikon DSLRs.

Either, or. Both are sturdy film cameras and will do the job. Pick what feels best to you.

What is nice about either system is that you can use those lenses on the same companies' DSLR cameras.

I'd go with the Nikon. But that's not to say the Pentax isn't a good camera. In fact the K1000 was used more than any other 35mm for photography classes in the past.

Both are good, if basic mf cameras, the K mount lenses will work on all Pentax DSLRs if you go that way in the future, the F mount lenses will work on all Nikon DSLRs except the very basic models (such as the current D3100 and D5100)

Nikon maybe have the slightly more prestige as a manufacturer, and will almost certainly be making DSLRs in 5 years time. Pentax have been bought and sold a few times in the last couple of years (by Hoya then Ricoh) and have launched a couple of interesting products (a medium format DSLR based on the 645 system, a micro interchangable system call the Q system, very similar in spirit to their old 110 SLRs) but will they be making K mount DSLRs in 5 years… It's a little less certain.

Ultimately, if you get the chance, pick up both, see what fits best in the hand. See which viewfinder gives you the best information, try and load a film into each, which is easier?

You are the one using it, and as basic slr, on paper, you can't go wrong with either, just so long as you feel confident using it.

When I worked in a camera shop, we sold both. Either is a great 35mm camera for your class, and will allow you to learn much.

But I bought the FE for a couple of reasons. First, I wanted a camera that I could use my other Nikon lenses on. The FE's lenses are backwards and forward compatible. I can use them on my D50, D70, D200, D300, and could even use them on a D7000, if necessary with full compatibility. The big plus fo the FE is, that it's an autofocus, autometer camera with FULL manual settings.

The Pentax K1000 (be careful, as the earlier ones metal on the top plate and later ones made in China used plastic), offers 100% compatibility with current Pentax lenses. It's a classic learner's camera with fewer bells & whistles.

One big difference you've got to realize is that the Nikon FE has an on/off switch for the light meter. The Pentax does not. Believe it or not, the meter is on whenever you remove the lens cap. Leave the lens cap off, and you're draining the battery, 24/7.
