Nikon F5 battery problem?

I recently bought a used Nikon F5 on eBay; it came with 8 (double A) Duracell batteries, but they're almost dead. I tried to replace them with 8 rechargeable Energizer batteries, and the camera didn't turn on.
I purchased 8 Kodak batteries and it won't work either. It ONLY works with the 8 (nearly dead) batteries that came with the camera when I bought it.
Perhaps this is a stupid question, but… Could it be that it only takes Duracell batteries?
Is this normal?

It should use any alkaline AA batteries
I use the discount alkaline AA batteries I get 48 at a time from Sam's Club or Costco.
They work just fine
NOTE: 1.5 v is 1.5 v.
The problem with NiMH batteries is that they only have 1.2 v output. That leaves you short 2.4 volts, so they can't power your F5

I just pulled my F5 out of the closet and put new batteries in and it also won't turn on. Tried 2 different sets of batteries in another camera and that camera worked. Any suggestions?
