Is the Nikon D5300 still worth it being 7 years old compared to newer camera models in the same price range?

Note: The D5300 was introduced in 2013, so if purchased at that time, the camera would only be 4 years old. The newest Nikon D5xxx series camera is the newest D5600. Visit the DP review website and compare those two cameras to see what features you will be getting by purchasing the newest version.

As far as using older cameras, I still use my 10-year-old Nikon D300 for certain assignments and it does an excellent job. I just used it to shoot about 7,000 photos shooting a Spartan Race over two days.

Here are two sample shots using the D300.

Yes but personally I'd go for the 13-year-old D70 instead because it's in a much lower price range.

New? How long since it was manufactured? Used? How many shutter actuations (walk away if more than 50,000). These things have built in obsolescence so you could see electronics and physical components starting to fail even if the camera has not been heavily used.
For example in an old Fuji I have that's 10 years old, some meatal and plastic clips have broken from the battery compartment, and the capacitor doesn't store date and time very long.

Your question leads me to ask, "Worth it in what way?" For instance, it has built in Wi-Fi and gps, which to me, are worthless. Do a comparison of the features that are "worth it" to you. Hope this helps.

I don't think it is when you compare to how much better the Pentax K-70 is:
In-body image stabilization
Pixel shift
AstroTracer
Weather & Dust Proof body
Better sensor
Not having to pay an extra premium for the Nikon name!

The D5300 is NOT 7 years old and is very comparible with the newest version of that camera.

My wife still uses her D5100 on a regular basis. Still a perfectly good camera.

My much older Sony A300 is still going strong, although starting to show signs of age. My A65 is still going strong.

I have a friend who enjoys using her D40, which is much older than the D5300.
