You can buy the version 1 of the lens from Nikon's outlet store. It will be refurbished, but at $624, who cares? There's little difference between version 1 and version 2 - very minor. You can also buy a refurbished version 2 lens for $699.

The only issue is the lens is not always in stock.
The other options is a Sigma or Tamron equivalent, but know that these are super-zooms and do have some optical issues. I have the Nikon 18-200, and while the sharpness is not consistent throughout the zoom range, if you set the lens to f/8, the sharpness improves tremendously, and is equivalent to some of my better lenses.
With the Sigma or Tamron lens, who knows how well they are compared to the Nikon. I think I would buy a refurbished Nikon over the other brands.
