How to get the zoom barrel to extend on my zoom nikkor 35-200mm lens?

I just bought this lens but I didn't get a user manual with it

Added (1). I have turned the largest ring on the lens barrel indicated with marks from 35 to 200mm but the barrel won't extend like it looks in this picture:

The largest ring on the lens barrel can be turned to zoom in and out. It should be indicated with marks from 35 to 200mm.
