Why is the nikkor 80-200mm f2.8D much cheaper than the nikkor 70-200mm f2.8G vr2?

Why is the nikkor 80-200mm f2.8D much cheaper than the nikkor 70-200mm f2.8G vr2?

It's an older design, from around the turn of the century so the R&D has been paid for. It also does not contain the VR2 mechanism, which means it's a bit cheaper in parts.

The 80-200mm f2.8D does not have Nikon's Vibration Reduction (VR) technology, the latest version being VR II. Additionally, the 80-200mm f2.8D is an AF lens which means it will NOT auto focus on the Nikon D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D3100 and D5000 DSLR cameras because the lens lacks a focusing motor as do the cameras. Only Nikon AF-S lenses will auto focus on the cameras listed since there's a focusing motor in the lens.
