Would a 55-200 mm lens zoom much further than a 18-55?

Right now I have a 18-55 mm lens on my camera that came with it. I like to take pictures of aeroplanes that approach the runway and sometimes some close-ups, therefore, I'm thinking about buying a new lens that can zoom further, and I've found a Nikkor 55-200mm lens. How much further does it zoom? Are there any other ones at a reasonable price? What is the difference about these two lenses?

Here is a link that shows you what different lens focal lengths "see"

If you want more "reach", look at the Nikkor 55-300 mm lens

I have a Pentax Kx which came with a 18-55 lens. Most DSLR's come with a comparable lens. I purchased an 18-200 lens from Tamron. Not only was this lens not as sharp as I prefer but the weight was something else! I had a neck ache in 30 minutes. I sold the 18-200mm and purchased a Pentax 50-200mm. WOW! What a pleasure the new lens is about the same physical size as the 18-55mm and is sharp as a tack. Yes I have the "inconvenience" of changing lenses but the print quality blows me away… And that is what counts! And to answer your question specifically, YES the magnification is great. This lens is also easier to hand hold vs the 18-200mm I referred to.

I don't know, is 200 a lot larger than 55?

I think a 55-200mm not enough for length to get shot from long distance ; but you should have 70-300 mm of nikon or third party lens.

Zoom further? Yes but not in the manner you are thinking of. The 55-200mm lens is a 3.6X zoom lens because 200mm divided by 55mm equals 3.6. The 18-55mm lens is a 3.0X zoom lens because 55mm divided by 18mm equals 3.0. Imagine that. It's only a 0.6 difference!

A 1000mm 1X lens (no typo there, 1X meaning it doesn't zoom) can make a distant object 5X closer to you than the 55-200mm 3.6X zoom lens. Yes, five times bigger! That's because in the dSLR world, focal length (mm) matters. Zoom is nothing more than a change of focal length.
