Is the 35mm lens much further away than the 50mm? (nikon d5100)?
I already own a 50mm 1.8G and a 70-300mm. I was planning to buy a 18-55mm VR or a 35mm 1.8 because the ones I have are ''too close''. Which one you recommend me to buy? Is the 35mm much further away than the 50mm?
Does anyone have any suggestions?
The 18-55mm should've been your first choice. It may be a little slow compared to the prime lenses, but it does give a true wideangle view at 18mm. The 35mm is virtually a standard lens on a cropped sensor, with the 50mm being a short telephoto.
The difference between 35mm and 50mm is noticeable but not great.
A general rule of thumb with photography is that a change by a factor of 2 is significant (as in exposure parameters).
Far more noticeable difference to a 50mm would be a 28mm lens.
The 35mm will give you a wider field of view and allow you to get closer to the subject & still get them in BUT if you are using these lenses for portraiture work I would NOT recommend it as it will cause some distortion, particularly at the edges.
You don't really want to be going less than 50mm for portraiture work.
If you are looking for faster lenses (better low light capability) AND you want to get more in the frame, then I suggest either the 17-5mm f2.8 or (you haven't mentioned budget) if you can afford it the 24-70mm f2.8.
