What is the optical zoom of the DSLR I'm interested in?
I'm interested in buying a DSLR lens before Christmas and came across the "18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens". Now no matter how hard I look there's absolutely no mention anywhere on the web of how far it can optical zoom. Why can't they simply specify how much it needs to zoom and how can I calculate how much a lens could zoom in the future. All help appreciated.
Unlike bridge cameras or point & shoot digitals, DSLR's can accept different lenses. Therefore no DSLR has a given "zoom ratio".
The kit 18-55m lens you will get is approximately a 3x lens. (Simple math, 55 divided by 18 or 18x3=54mm)
In dslr cameras you can forget the "X" thing with zoom - it doesn't exist so there's no ratio.
The longer the lens, as in 18-200, the more zoom.
You really need to educate yourself about focal lengths, not 'zoom', if considering buying a dSLR. Luckily, there's plenty of information available on the internet. Here are just three links (of the many that are available) that will help you understand…
