Is 16 MP and 7x optical zoom good?

Paul

I thinking of buying a new camera and have found one but I haven't got a clue when it comes to features and all that.
Its a Nikon camera and has…
16 MP
7X Optical Zoom
4X Digital Zoom
Zoom lens - 5 mm - 35 mm - f/3.7-5.6

Is that any good for a digital camera?

7X is a nice optical zoom range that will cover most of your needs without getting too bloated in weight or optical compromises. However, the gimmick of cramming 16 MP into a compact sensor is not a good one. Because of the high pixel density, they have to apply more noise reduction, and that smudges low contrast detail like foliage, hair. Or other textures.

It sounds like a decent point and shoot camera. Keep in mind that all "zoom" means is the difference between the furthest out and the closest in - in this case, 5mm x 7 = 35mm.

35mm is a standard focal length, so you won't be zooming in much compared to most cameras. However, 5mm is great for wide angle. I haven't even seen that focal length on wide angle lenses I've looked at.

I agree with the first reply about 16MP. Great resolution, but you are going to lose some details in the image.

Yes it's good, but it's the lens which you need to worry about most.

E.g. You could have a digital camera which is 16MP, but it may have a rubbish lens meaning your pictures won't come out as best as some other cameras would give you, and there could be a 10MP camera with a much better lens.

I once had a 14MP camera, but the lens wasn't good. So, when I got onto a computer and zoomed in to the image, it went pixelated, yet when I got a 12MP camera with a better lens, the zoomed in photo looked much better.

Ask in the camera store which is best lens wise. Not megapixels.

Hope this helps!

Of the specifications you listed, forget about the pixel count and the digital zoom range. Both are marketing gimmicks.
