Is the Nikon TC 20E compatible with Nikkor 24-70 F2.8?

Is the Nikon TC-20E (II or III) compatible with the Nikkor 24-70mm F2.8?
I would like to take as little gear as possible for travel and would love to take the 24-70 + TC20e instead of lugging the 70-200 F2.8 along.
If the answer is "No", please provide evidence. I've seen a lot of "No" answers to this question, but never any evidence to support it.

According to Nikon it is not:

Looking at pics of the 24-70 I see a hefty rear element that protrudes quite a bit. I know kenko makes some TCs that allow for quite a lot of glass so a 1.4 or even a 1.7 might fit.
Personally. I'd just pack a small telezoom. A 55-200 VR if you're shooting DX, a 70-210 if you're shooting fx. Both will be significantly cheaper than the TC20E.
