It is, as long as you are willing to manually focus the lens. The Nikon dSLR's have an electronic rangefinder in the viewfinder to assist when manually focusing lenses (something photographers have been doing for decades)
If you want full auto-focus on your D5000, you will have to buy Nikkor AF-S lenses
