That user's manual is not there just for packing purposes. READ IT. It will tell you how to do video as well as everything else you need to know about the camera.

… Sheesh, … The lazy people in this world today…

You'll want to poor yourself a nice adult beverage prior to trying to use a D5300 for video.
Keep all firearms and sharp objects out of sight. Basically what I'm getting at is that Nikons are frustrating to use in video mode, which is why no one ever recommends them for video.

For heaven's sake, READ the Instruction Manual! You'll discover many features, functions and options that you don't know your camera has to offer you to take advantage for better quality images! You'll learn about the features, functions and options, what they are, where they're located, and when and HOW to use them. Question: WHAT is the main reason people have difficulties with their cameras? Answer: They don't read the Instructions Manual. READ the Instructions Manual, and take the time to practice before setting out to use the camera for photos or videos. READ and PRACTICE… How else are you ever going to learn and get experience? During the summer, I was out shooting with my cameras (both Nikon Full Frame cameras) and someone interrupted me to ask me how to do something… I asked, "Did you read your instructions manual?" He replied, "No." I told him, I charge for teaching and for interrupting me" and turned away from him. When you're more experienced, you'll understand and appreciate what I did (I'm going to waste time from what I'm doing while taking advantage of the light and dealing with people passing in front of me and blocking my view to help someone who's too lazy to read his own camera's Instructions Manual? I don't think so! I suspect old age has made a cantankerous old curmudgeon (slightly redundant, huh?)
