How to hook my Nikon DSLR to my computer?
I'm sorry, I'm going to sound very stupid right now. I've noticed that some people have been able to hook their DSLR's to their computers in a way similar to a webcam (the only way I can explain it). How exactly can you do that? Do I need some sort of software, cords.etc? I have an iMac and a Nikon 3200.
I don't think you can do it unless the camera has a special 'webcam mode'. There needs to be a connection on the camera that puts out live video. This will be the USB port if the camera has a webcam mode. So look in your manual.
No, no web cam mode is required. What is required is what's called "tethering". This software in your computer and firmware in your camera have to match to talk to each other.
Check your owner's manual for tethering. If it's not mentioned you probably can't. Only a few select cameras are capable of tethering. I have one that is and then it only displays stills after they're shot.
It doesn't show video.
You can tether your D3200 with Apple's Aperture 3. Just check to see if your older iMac can handle the program.
