How to fix my shutter problems, Nikon N65 35mm?

I was taking some pictures yesterday and I was adjusting my shutter speed and it would not go above 30, and I've never had that problem before. But I don't want to have to use my tripod for every time I take a picture. The recently with the last few pictures I took it seems like the shutter is staying open way longer than it should. I don't want to develop my film and it's over exposed.
So it anyone knows how to fix it please tell me.

If you mean 30 seconds, I'm not surprised. That's a very long exposure.

Try shooting manually, so that you can control your speed, but if there's a problem, repair could be expensive.

Your Nikon N65 will set a long exposure time if, you have the lens stopped down to a smaller aperture (eg: f/16), you have a low ISO film (eg: ISO 100), and/or you are in a low light situation. Changing any one or two of these factors and you'll have a wider range of shutter speeds.

FYI, shooting handheld at 1/30 is tough,. But possible. A big question would be what mode you're using. If you are shooting in A (aperture priority) or P (programmed) mode, the camera will be forced to only allow shutterspeeds that would give you the proper exposure, and limits your choices. If you shoot in M (manual). You can choose any shutterspeed you want, but may end up with a roll of dark prints and a well under-exposed roll of film.
