How can someone become a Professional photographer?
I'm only 14, and I know I'm not going to become a professional photographer yet. But what steps can I take to get there? Like what camera? Nothing too expensive, I was looking at getting a Nikon v1? Amy good. All I have at the moment is an iPhone 4S, any help is good!

Any camera that you can buy today can produce impressive photos. While Dpreview gave the v1/j1 a lukewarm review (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikonv1j1), it's a good camera. The so-called MILCs (mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras) are better than any point-and-shoot because of the larger sensor. The optics are much better too.

As for becoming a professional photographer, I take it to mean that you want to do it for a living when you grow up. That's what professional means. Most professional photographers are wedding and event shooters. The jobs in other fields -- sports, fashion, and product, for example -- are harder to come by. Nobody is recommending photojournalism. That profession is in decline. Some newspapers have laid off their photographers because they can get shots from reporters and citizens with smart phones.

To break into a profession, the single most important asset is your portfolio. Job interviewers will want to see what you've done. So this is something practical that you can start right now. Your portfolio should demonstrate a good eye, the ability to capture the moment, and mastery of the technical aspects of the craft: exposure, focus, lighting, etc. So get to work. A v1 is a good camera for this purpose. But bear in mind, the camera is just a tool. It's the person holding it that creates the compelling images. Having a quality camera won't get you there. Your skills will.

I'd suggest a D-SLR, not an over priced point & shoot like the Nikon 1. Real photographers use D-SLRs.
Look at some like the Nikon D3000 / D3100 or Canon Rebel T3.
Your best bet is to go to the library and see what kind of books they have for the new photographer.
