How good are LED ring lights & what are the deciding factors in selection?
I'm using the Nikon 40mm f/2.8 macro lens and I'm struggling with the light getting choked off. Am thinking of a LED ring light to get over this issue and need help in deciding
Ring lights have been used by photographers when using Macro lenses for decades.
The new LED type lights will give you some consistent control over the light that falls on your subject. Because it is a continuous light, you can actually see how the light on your objects actually will look when you take your shots.
You are still going to have to manually focus your lens and use the lens aperture to pull the necessary depth of field, but your lighting issues will be pretty much gone since the lens will no longer be in the path of the lighting you use If you are doing beauty, makeup types of videos, the "Diva" florescent light is still the preferred light. But it is something like $300.
The new LED ring lights are about $130 and rival the Diva light especially if you get the one with the multiple filters. Faces like a more warm honey colored light but doing macro work for crafting, hobby videos, etc., the less expensive LED lights are actually pretty good. They are also battery powered and this removes an AC power cord that 'tethers' your camera.
But again - what you are taking pictures of matters (and you failed to mention this). But the LED ring lights are pretty good. Just make sure to buy the models with the gels/diffusers to give you options.
