HD camera and laptop

My laptop can't play 1080p videos without everything going choppy but I have a Nikon J1 which records in 1080p. How do I get my laptop to play the videos I've taken so I can watch and edit them?

Try vlc player or convert it useing format factory (free ware ) and then play it
Vlc should play it by playing the video at 720 p with out converting
