GOOD quality cameras?

I want a camera that takes very good quality but I don't know much about camera's. It's not for photography for anything so nothing professional. I just want a camera that can make pictures look high quality. I was told to get a Nikon.
Suggestions?
Nothing over 800$-900$ please, thats about as high as I can go.

Well if you think your knowledge will allow you to operate a dslr or if you're willing to take a course in such cameras I'll suggest one that I own… The Canon t1i. $650 or so with a kit lens at 18-55.
It's an excellent camera and I'm having very nice results with it.
