How to make a profit of regular shooting photography?

I'm an amateur photographer with a Nikon D300. I'm also a university student. I've been taking a lot of photos of events, both private and local. I was asked if I was going to sell the photos, and I didn't quite know how to answer the question. How would I go about selling almost… Spontaneous shots? If a shot turns out really well, how could I make a profit off of it?
Thanks so much for your time and a full rating for the best answer!

I started out in high school shooting pictures for the school newspaper of events like the Vaudeville and Senior Play. Those who were performing asked the same question, and I replied $1 for an 8x10. I upped it to $2.50 when I went to college, and made quite a little bit on the side that way.
Today, I know to figure in things like the cost of gasoline to and from the shoot, and that I'd like to make more than minimum wage for those hours, plus all the other hours in between assignments when I'm idle, but that's what you take accounting courses to learn how to do. And I did. My degree is in accounting and management, not photography.
