Zoom lens for the Nikon D7000?
I have a Nikon D7000 and I'm looking for a good but cheap zoom lens to go with my 18 - 105 lens that came with the camera. I have found the following lenses that seem affordable. Any advice regarding the suitability and compatibility of each would be appreciated. Thanks.
Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED VR Lens £ 110
Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens £ 190
Nikon AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR Lens £ 370
The 70-300mm is the one you'd choose if you could have what you wanted - it's an absolute cracker.
The 55-200mm is the budget model, but still a useful performer in anybody's language.
The 55-300mm, is a good lens with a longer reach than its 55-200mm brother.
You should also note that the D7000 is compatible with AF lenses, as well as AF-S, so if you like the 70-300mm, look around for the AF version - a good dealer will carry used examples and probably throw in a warranty. You won't get it for £110, but you'll get one of the best possible lenses for a lot less than £370.
Jessops or a local dealer are a good place to start, but look at the dealer adverts in, 'Amateur Photographer,' as well (your local library is bound to have a copy if you don't feel like buying one ).
Nikon AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR Lens £ 370
Since your D7000 has a focusing motor in the camera body you can use the less expensive Nikkor AF lenses and still have auto focus.
Look for a used AF 70-300mm zoom.
I've got the 70-300 VR lens on my D7000 and it is a great lens. I used to have the 55-200mm VR, which works well, but is nowhere near as quick to autofocus or as sharp. It's not a lightweight combination, but the 70-300mm VR is the best choice for that camera.
Ignore the advice about looking for an old 70-300mm lens. With long telephoto you really do want VR. The old 70-300mm "G" lens will work, but the AF will be slower and the lack of VR will limit you.
The 55-300mm VR would be okay if you can't afford the 70-300mm lens, but it is slower to focus and not as sharp. It's not a bad lens but the 70-300mm is much, much better.
