Would a any nikon lens work for a nikon d40x?

The 35mm f/1.8 AF-S will work with the D40x, including autofocus. For autofocus to work, you need lenses with the AF-S or AF-I designation. Most other Nikon lenses will also work, but you will need to manually focus them.

Here's a partial list of lenses that are compatible with your D40x. Virtually every new lens offered by Nikon, Sigma, Tokina, & Tamron have been compatible with the entry level Nikon DSLR's.
