Will any Nikon lense work on a Nikon d40x?

I've got a D40x and looking a purchasing a few lenses, and was wondering will All lenses work on the d40x?

The good news - all Nikon mount lenses will fit, and produce an image.

The bad news - AI, AI'd, pre-AI, AIS and Series E won't autofocus and you may lose some - or all - of your metering modes.

Of the two autofocus types;

AF need a motor in the camera body to allow autofocus, but give full metering options (I'm not sure if the D40 has such a motor - consult your manual).

AF-S allow full focus and metering functionality.

D40x has no motor so you will need Nikon AF-S, Sigma HSM or Tamron built in motor to get autofocus.
