Will a Nikon ED AF NIKKOR 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 D lens work on a Nikon D3100?

Added (1). I'm trying to find a cheaper way to get best possible zoom

It won't autofocus with it. Being the cheap version of 70-300mm it will waste money that would have been better saved for something else.

The lens will work on the D3100, but sinc eit is an older lens which does not have an autofocus motor in the body, it can only be used in manual mode. However, all metering information etc will be communicated to the body, it just loses tha ability to autoficus.

The differenc ebetween this and the latter "G" version is the fact that the later one has the focus motor in the body of the lens and doe snot have the aperture control ring that the D version has (an omission many have issues with!)

As a zoom lens this is a good zoom on your crop factor camera (effectively 105-450mm) but will not autofocus and obviously is not as sharp as a prime at either end or the more expensive zooms with fixed apertures.

As a cheaper zoom it will perform well, but is obviously not going to be as sharp as some, though in the vast majority of cases it will function perfectly fine for normal usage
