Does the AF-S Nikkor VR 28-300mm lens work with DX format cameras?

I want to replace my 55-200mm lens with a general purpose lens. I'm contemplating between this and a 18-200mm lens for my D5000. The websites I have researched at say this lens is only to be used on FX format camera's.

You misunderstood. It will work just fine on a DX body. However, 28mm is not very wide on DX. With that in mind a 18-200 would make more sense and it's cheaper.
