Wide angle camera lenses fitting nikon d5100?

Sean

I'm looking for a wide angle lens to fit my new d5100, in was looking at the Nikon 14-24 F/2.8 but that is Way TO PRICEY FOR ME (unless someone would sell me one second hand a bit cheaper) are there any other nikon wide angle lenses? Or are there any sigma or tamron for a bit less that will still fit my camera? Links to sales or auctions for some would be nice.

Added (1). Anything under $750 would be in my price range

For ultra wide angle lenses, there are three that i would consider:

Nikon 10-24mm
Tokina 11-16/2.8 (no autofocus on your camera. I use that one on my D90)
Sigma 10-20/4-5, 6 (cheaper but also better than the 10-20mm/3.5 version of this lens… Autofocuses on your camera)

There's also a Tamron ultra wide angle lens, but that one is not very popular.

So… In your case the Sigma would be the most reasonable choice:

Unless you want to spend $850 or so for the Nikon, i'd even consider it to be a no-brainer choice. It's the cheapest out of the three, optically good and autofocuses on your camera. It's only downside is that it's not a terribly fast lens in terms of maximum aperture, but even then Nikon lens is only a little bit better there. The Tokina on the other hand is significantly better in that department, but that only matters if you intend to do a lot of handheld indoor shooting (low light).

The Sigma 10-20 and Tamron 10-24 are both cheaper than the Nikon equivalent. The Sigma in particular is quite a popular lens to be honest and is one I'd like to add to my collection (with a 77mm 'big stopper'!). They're slower lenses of course but still capable.

If you have a bit more money but less than what the Nikon 14-24 commands than Sigma also do a 12-24, Nikon do a 10-24 and Tokina do a 11-16 which might be worth looking at.

The Tamron 11mm to 16mm f2.8 is the best from a point of view of overall quality. Don't be too ambitious - if you want the wide end (i.e.around 10 to 12mm) go for it, don't bother with anything over about 18mm - it's hard to design wide-angles with big zoom ranges, so the length over 20mm is just a marketing tool and tends to lower quality.

The Nikkor 10-24 is sharp and produce stunning pictures. The lens is sharp even wide open at f/4, colour saturation is excellent and minimal loss of detail at the edge of the picture. At the wide end, wide angle of the lens give you the ability to take pictures of amazing perspective. Wide angle lens have really large depth of field, so focus is almost not required. Most pictures will come out file if the lens is left at infinity all the time. The distortion at 10mm is fairly substantial, I do not suggest taking picture of straight lines at 10mm, or it will come out all out of shape.

The good:
- Sharp at most f stops
- Good colour
- Fast focus

The bad:
- Not exactly a cheap lens
- Heavy
- External Zoom mechanism, I definitely hit the front to the lens several times
- 10mm has substantial distortion
