What Wide angle lens would be good on a Nikon D5100?

So, I need a wide angle lens for my Nikon D5100 - this is a DX camera, so this is a cropped camera basically.

I was looking at the Tokina 14-24mm camera but I wasn't sure how much of a difference it would be to my 18-55mm nikon nikkor lens. I understand that the difference is 4mm between 14 and 18. But Because it is cropped would it still be the same difference (4mm difference).

By the way, if the answer to the above question is yes, then no need to read this following thing.

What lens would be good, for around £250 - which is around 12-28mm or something very similar, NO FISHEYE!

Thank you, and I hope you leave a reply

Added (1). SORRY IT IS THE 12-24MM TOKINA!

I have the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, and it is an outstanding lens - highly recommended. The 12-24 is essentially the same lens with slightly different glass that gives you a bit more on the long end, but sacrifices that in low light capability.

The 11-16 is great for inside buildings such as museums, cathedrals, etc. As well as cruise ships (where I mostly use it). The f/2.8 will also help in low light situations inside buildings as well.

Compared to your 18mm, it will give you about 40% more of an expanded view. At 11mm, the angle of view is 104deg. Your 18mm lens is 76deg.

If you buy one - or even the 12-24, realize that Tokina has two different models of each lens for Nikon. The DX and DX II. You need the DX II version as the DX version does not have a focus motor in the lens, so it can only be autofocused with a D90, D7000, etc.

Hi

I would recommend the Nikon 10-24mm AF-S which is a DX specific lens, its a superbly sharp lens but does suffer from distortion at the 10mm end, its not a fisheye either and will maintain normal picture from 12mm upwards.

Brand new its fairly expensive retailing at about £640 but shop around for used or on eBay and you can get it for much cheaper (i got mine for about £400 and was in almost new condition).

NPhoto (Nikon Specific Magazine) rated it as the best Wide angle lens for DX Sensor type cameras.

Whilst the Nikon 12-24mm is equally good it has been built to almost Pro Standard so costs a lot more.

Ken Rockwells Website has a very in depth review about the Nikon 10-24mm.

The Sigma 10-24mm f4.0-5.6 gets consistently good reviews, both from independent reviewers and from customers. You can get it new for about £350 or second hand on ebay for under £250.

Be careful if you are buying secondhand to get the newer HSM version which will work with Auto-Focus on your camera and not the older EX version without HSM, which won't AF

A 6mm difference in DX is equivalent to 9mm on the full-frame or old 35mm cameras. The DX 18-55 is equivalent to the same field of view as a 27-82.5 full-frame lens. The 12-24mm would be equivalent to 18-36mm, which is very wide. The Sigma 10-20mm would be equivalent to a 15-30mm wide angle, which is extremely wide, but not fisheye - although you are going to see some perspective distortion at the widest angles.

If you are going to use extreme wide angles, I strongly recommend using DXO Optics Pro software, which will correct the lens defects for you. See Ken Rockwell's article on it here: http://www.kenrockwell.com/...cs-pro.htm Roll over the pictures to see how well it corrects.
