The Canon G12 is a P&S camera with a permanently attached lens. It is also not a fully adjustable camera exactly. Attempting to manually focus and set the exposure using such a camera can be a challenge.

The Nikon D5100 has a sensor that is over 15 times larger than a P&S camera, uses interchangeable lenses from fisheye to extreme telephoto and is designed to be fully adjustable.

These factors alone make the D5100 a better choice if you want to learn photography. Comparing the sensor performance, shows perhaps the most compelling reason to buy the D5100

Definitely the D5100.

The Canon G12 is a nice camera, but not that nice.

The G12 compares to the Nikon Coolpix P7100/P7000

The G12 is possibly the best camera of it's type on the market, I have it's predecessor the G11.It's a camera that I ue when a DLSR (or slt) is just too bulky or inconvenient. But when it comes to flexibility and absolute control The G12 (or G11 in my case) is no match for even an entry level DSLR.

It's a great second (or third) camera, but probably not your best option for a main camera if you intend to experiment!

G12 n d5100 both r diffrent type of camera's they hav no comparison with each other.g12 is the best camera in its category
as for as d5100 i'll suggest that its better you should go for canon t2i or t3i

G12 is a point and shoot, D5100 is a DSLR. Two completely different worlds.

D5100 will be better for what you intend to shoot, as it has a larger sensor, thus captures more details with less noise Plus it's faster at everything!
