Which is the better Nikon camera?

The D3100 or the D5000

I want the camera for mainly taking pictures of my sons in sports. Sometimes I need to take pictures in the gym or a large room where lighting is low. And sometimes outside during football at nighttime. I'm just starting to get "serious" about photography. I have taken some pics for the family. Maternity, new baby photos, wedding.etc. But have always used a point and shoot. I'm not familiar with the whole ISO settings and I have heard there's a problem with the 3100 in that area. Which camera is better and can you tell me what that ISO means.

The D3100 is more sophisticated, because it has more mega pixels.

But, there are no bad cameras, only bad photographers. Some people may just prefer the D5000.

I recommend looking at a website called cameralabs.com

They have full reviews, and video tutorials about almost all the cameras on the market. That way, you can compare for yourself.

ISO is a measurement used to quantify how sensitive a camera's sensor is to light. The higher the ISO setting, the faster your shutter speed can be because the sensor does not need to be exposed to light as long. However, a higher ISO setting also means grainier pictures. Therefore, high ISO settings above ISO 800 are usually best kept for conditions where you really need it- such as indoors.

A low ISO setting isn't as sensitive to light, but it allows for clearer and less-grainy pictures. Therefore, low ISO settings is best for shooting outdoors during the daytime.

Both the Nikon D3100 and Nikon D5000 should be more than capable in terms of high ISO performance. What matters more is the lens you choose. If you plan on shooting indoor sports or football during nighttime, you'll need to choose the lens that suits the job.
