Which camera, Nikon D3100, or Canon Rebel XS?

I need to choose one of these cameras to buy, but I'm a beginner and I don't know which camera to choose from. Which camera should I choose? I don't really need video on it so.

Between the two, even just for picture quality, I would choose the D3100.

of course, if you don't really care for video, best would be for you to simply go to a camera store and see for yourself which one you like better- meaning which one fits in your hand, is easiest for you to manipulate, handle, etc.

My personal choice would be D3100 because it's cheaper. Both are great cameras for beginners.
