What are you talking about? Photoshop Elements 9 is an editing program. It's compatible with any image.

If you have an older version and you are trying to read raw, it may not have been updated when the new cameras came out and you won't be able to read raw files. You will need to download the DNG converter in order to use raw with an older version that wasn't updated. As for jpegs it's a standard file. Photoshop will read a jpeg from ANY camera.

The D3100 is compatible with Adobe Camera RAW version 6.3, which is only available in the latest version of Photoshop Elements (version 9).

If you need the update, go here:

If you have an older version, you can use Nikon's own ViewNX software to convert your raw images:

As always, JPEGs are supported by most every version of Photoshop, though they can't be edited as thoroughly as raw format images.

The answer you're looking for (straight from Adobe) is here on their website…

You'll see a list of natively compatible cameras a little more than a third of the way down the page but, the short answer however is yes your camera is compatible with Photoshop Elements. More specifically, the RAW converter included with PS and PS Elements is Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), the current version of which is 6.4.1. ACR 6.4.1 is able to open RAW files from the Nikon D3100 and every Nikon DSLR released to date.

You should also have a RAW conversion software that was included with your Nikon. You can use this software to convert your camera's RAW files to TIFF or JPEG files that you can then edit in Photoshop/Photoshop Elements regardless of which camera you use. This is something to keep in mind if, a few years from now, you decide to upgrade to a Nikon model that hasn't yet been released that ACR can't open natively. Adobe also offers a free DNG converter should you find you can't open a file in ACR. It's worth noting that sometimes, people prefer the RAW converters provided by the OEM manufacturers compared to what they get with ACR.

Elements 10 has just been released and its ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) plugin will be compatible with your Nikon.
