The answer above me is absolutely wrong. At the beginner entry-level, Nikon and Canon have few technical differences between their cameras. More often than not the biggest differences lies in the ergonomics and the selection of lenses you can use. I'm a Canon user (EOS 50D) and have used both Canon and Nikon DSLRs, and neither brand are "lacking features". Think about it: If Nikon really was that deficient, why are they one of the two largest camera manufacturers after all these years?

As for where to purchase them, I take it you want a brick&mortar store. Wal-Mart, Fry's Electronics (if you have them) and Best Buy are the best places to look. Personally, I prefer online shopping more, since dedicated camera stores are now online and no longer have brick & mortar stores. These places tend to have much more knowledgable staff and a much much wider range of accessories and lenses. B&H and Adorama are my personal favorite places.

That said, you still can't go wrong with Wal-Mart, Fry's, and Best Buy. However, my experience with the salesmen are that they're both misinformed and are too driven by commission, so I can't stress enough how important it is for you to research what you want to buy and stick to your plan. Don't let the salesmen muscle you into upgrading to another model you don't need.

As for Nikon vs Canon, since you named the D5000, I take it that the Canon you're looking at is the T1i (There are multiple Canon Rebels on the market right now). Between the two, the biggest differences for a beginner would be the D5000 has a swivel screen and 1080p video on the T1i (The D5000 can only do 720p). That said, unless you absolutely must have one of these features, I'd focus more on the ergonomics of the body, and base your purchase simply on which camera feels more comfortable in your hand. In the end, photography is about the skill, not the camera, and few things will help or hinder you more than how comfortable you are using the camera.
