What's a great photography camera to buy?

Well I had a nikon D3000 i sold around a year ago.
I would love to get back in to photography and my girlfriend is getting annoyed with my stealing her Pentax.
So I want to buy me another now i'm not sure what is a great camera to buy?
I don't want any of the D3xxx or 5xxx
So what is a great nikon camera i should invest in too, or Should i go with a pentax? If so which one?

Added (1). I heard people say get a D60 or D80.
Would i be better off getting a D5000 or one of the D60 or D80s?

Then buy a nice Nikon D7000 or step up to a D700 or D3

Here is where the camera companies are going. You may change your mind about buying a Pentax system

What happened to your D3000… To you have any of the lenses still?

If you are going to go with a d60 or d80… GET THE D80… That was like the first REAL camera in the series… It has a built in motor for focusing lenses so you are not necessarily stuck with just buying the lenses witha built in focusing motor… PLUS the d80 has a built in commander for wireless lighting and overall is a better built higher featured camera than the d60.

If you really want to go a bit higher, the d90 was regarded as almost a semipro camera that a lot of guys used as a backup camera for weddings and so forth… And NOW, after a long waiting period, the d90 has been upgraded by the d7000… Which is getting some terrific reviews… In some ways better than even the semipro 300s from nikon and is definitely comparable to the 60D from canon and even the 7d from canon

I personally have the d80. I love it. I haven't even begun to outgrow its capabilities and have been shooting for close to a decade overall. With this and other cameras… This was my first REAL digital. There's still stuff to learn.

Why nikon? You could try canon if you want. I prefer canon myself. I have a canon 600D.

The Best Camera Is The One That's With You
Off the mic, I have a Canon 7D with a rack on lenses and external flash and whatsoever, then I have a Canon SX230 HS (the only compact camera with 14x zoom and GPS onboard) ALWAYS in my pocket.

The best moments are always caught by the SX230, and out of 100 pics taken, I realize that 80 are taken with the SX230…

If you're not willing to change lenses (with a wide aperture that unfortunately cost a lot of $$$), don't bother in looking for some APS format (FOV @1.5 or 1.6) it's a waste of money and really not worth it: better stick with the handy and fully manually operated SX230. Consider a DSRL eventually, if you can afford a full frame with a rack of lenses… But again… You can't always hang around with a 6lb cannon.
