What would be better, a Sony a55 or a nikon d90?

Added (1). Thanks to everyone for you responses, my decision has been somewhat clarified and it seems like majority recommends nikon, not only you but my friends and family do too.
Again thank you for your help!

I would side with Nikon just because they seem to be the leaders currently in the DSLR field, after them comes Canon. Sony makes the cameras, but they just do not compare to the long-developed optics of Nikon and Canon.

the D90 is a great camera, but make sure you know what you are doing

Definitely Nikon over Sony any day. No questions asked.

The Sony A55 is more of an entry level camera like the Nikon D3000.

The D90 is a far superior dSLR which has a magnesium alloy chassis and rubber hand grip and is one of Nikon's best bang for the buck until the D3100 and D7000 were introduced earlier this month

Can't go wrong with a Nikon. My Nikon D40 is one of the best investments I've ever made, and I'm in love with it! Nikon is the leader in cameras, Sony is more of an electronics company.

Wow! I'm amazed at all the responses that are based on nothing other than 'Nikon is a cool name'. None of them compare the specs of the camera.

Well, here's the reality… Sony makes the chips that Nikon uses, and their cameras use them so much better, offering more features for the money. Sony has built in anti-shake (in the body rather than each expensive lens), offering better hand-held photos. The Sony a55 is in a whole new class, offering HD video quality and high speed (10fps shooting) that are only matched in the most expensive Nikons and Canons -- but for an entry level price. The Sony also gives you 16mp rather than the Nikon d90s 12mp.

So… If all you want is a cool name, by all means go with Nikon or Canon. But if you want the very best photos for your money, choose Sony.

Many people do not know. Actually Sony has high performance cameras also! I will definitely go for A55, with so many functions with great pictures, user friendly, the best HD VIDEO record, 10fps and build in GPS you get with very reasonable price. You will never regret buying Sony A55! D90 is an old camera it will be replaced at anytime.
