What would be a good camera for me?

I want a camera that's good for self portraits, and that can also take videos. I was looking at maybe the Nikon d5000? I would prefer something 500 dollars or under, 800 at the most expensive.

Don't get the D5000 because it is only standard HD and the vari angle screen is a bad design. Get the D5100, it us the replacement of the D5000 has a better design and gas full HD movie. It also has a lot more settings in movie and you should purchase an external mic to make movie sound quality excellent. It also has 16 megapixels.

On the cheaper side, if you want good quality but less cost go with the Kodak Easyshare Z981, for good quality and price Canon EOS Rebel XS.
